Brisbane
Come to Brisbane and you'll discover a region that's not only filled with energy, you'll also find it's filled with endless things to do. Sophisticated and progressive, dynamic and diverse, Brisbane delivers on all fronts. Visitors and locals alike delight in the very best in food, wine, arts, entertainment and major sporting events, all surrounded by a unique environment of relaxed sub-tropical flair. There's exciting shopping, a buzzing night-time scene, and no end to the range of outdoor adventures on offer, such as sailing, surfing, hot-air ballooning and 4WD excursions.
Brisbane’s location also offers fantastic opportunities for travel and sightseeing. Just south lies the 32km stretch of coastline known as the Gold Coast which includes the party capital of Surfers Paradise. North of the city is the world heritage site of Fraser Island and further north towards Cairns lie the stop-off points for the magnificent Whit Sunday Islands where boat tours offer the most amazing views of the Great Barrier Reef.
Brisbane is a dream destination for anyone passionate about sport. It has two of the best stadiums in Australia – Suncorp and the Gabba which host numerous great sporting matches throughout the year. Suncorp is the home venue of the Brisbane Broncos, the current NRL champions, the Queensland Reds (Super 14) and the Queensland Roar (Hyundai A League football). Suncorp also hosts the fiercely contested State of Origin rugby league matches between Queensland and New South Wales. International and domestic cricket matches are held at the Gabba during the summer.
Brisbane is a great place to play a wide range of sports including cricket, hockey, rugby union, rugby league, netball and rowing. Queensland have, for example, dominated domestic cricket in Australia over the last 10 years with players such as Stuart Law, Andrew Symonds, Andy Bichel and Matthew Hayden. Hockey is also particularly strong in Brisbane; Queensland have won the men’s Australian Hockey League for four out of the last five years and there are 10 Queenslanders in the current Australian men’s hockey squad. There are also several very strong rowing clubs in Brisbane that have produced numerous Australian representatives.
Queensland’s great climate and fantastic reputation for sport makes it an ideal venue for sporting academies. The Sport Lived Rugby Union Academy and the Sport Lived Hockey Academy are both located in Brisbane. As well as playing and training, Sport Lived can also arrange for you to coach sport in schools in Brisbane, where you can get paid to coach the sport you love.
So head to sunny Brisbane for your ultimate year away!
