Health advice in Australia

Our top tips for staying safe

We have written the tips below as a guide to staying healthy in Australia. Whilst we make every effort to keep the information on our website as accurate as possible, we recommend that you visit health and safety related travel websites such as:  www.fco.gov.uk and www.nathnac.org.

Top tips 1

Plan your trip

It’s important that you think carefully about the countries and places you might visit before, during and after your Sport Lived programme in Australia. It will be easier for you to get the necessary vaccinations and medication in the UK prior to your departure than when you are travelling overseas.

It is also important to think about the activities which you might undertake during your time overseas and obtain a suitable travel insurance policy. Australia offers diverse range of activities – diving, skiing, skydiving, etc.

Top tips 2

Reciprocal heath agreement

Reciprocal medical arrangements exist between Australia and the UK. Under the reciprocal agreement British nationals visiting Australia may receive emergency medical treatment under the Australian Medicare scheme.

There are exclusions under the reciprocal agreement such as treatment for pre-existing medical conditions, pharmaceuticals when not a hospital in-patient, use of ambulance services and medical evacuations. The latter, in particular, is very expensive.

You should check Medicare Australia for further details.

Top tips 3

Stay safe in the sun

The sun in Australia is very strong and burn times are much lower than in the UK.  We advocate the most famous Aussie heath advice when out in the sun: Slip-Slop-Slap. ‘Slip’ on a shirt, ‘slop’ on sunscreen, and ‘slap’ on a hat in order to protect yourself against the sun.

Top tips 4

Beach safety

Rip currents are a hazard for all beach users. They can occur at any beach, and can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea.

To enjoy Australia’s beaches safely, take the following simple precautions:

  • Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim alone or at unsupervised locations.
  • Observe and obey safety signage, which indicates current and typical hazards for that location.
  • Ask a lifeguard or lifesaver for advice on conditions; they are there to make your experience safer and more enjoyable.

Further guidance on beach safety is available on the SLSA website.

Top tips 5

Travel insurance

It is essential that you have travel insurance for your Sport Lived programme. We will provide details of a recommended travel insurance policy in your Confirmation. Please think carefully about the activities you might undertake whilst overseas and ensure your policy offers cover for these.
