Health advice in New Zealand

Our top tips for staying safe

We have written the tips below as a guide to staying healthy in New Zealand. Whilst we make every effort to keep the information on our website as accurate as possible, we recommend that you visit health and safety related travel websites such as:  www.fco.gov.uk and www.nathnac.org.

Top tips 1

Plan your trip

It’s important that you think carefully about the countries and places you might visit before, during and after your Sport Lived programme in Australia. It will be easier for you to get the necessary vaccinations and medication in the UK prior to your departure than when you are travelling overseas.

It is also important to think about the activities you might undertake during your time overseas and obtain a suitable travel insurance policy. New Zealand is famous for its diverse range of adventure activities – rafting, bungee, skiing, skydiving, etc.

Top tips 2

Reciprocal health agreement

There is a reciprocal agreement between Britain and New Zealand to enable citizens of either country to enjoy (subject to certain conditions) the benefits of the National Health Services of the other country if permanently or temporarily resident. State medical facilities in New Zealand are excellent. Standards of hospital, medical and dental treatment in New Zealand are comparable to those in the UK.

Top tips 3

Stay safe in the sun

Due to its southerly position, the ozone layer over New Zealand is thinner than elsewhere and sunburn times are shorter than in the UK. During the summer, hats should be worn when outdoors and a high factor sun block applied.

Research has shown that asthma sufferers may be more at risk of an attack in New Zealand and sufferers should be suitably prepared.

Top tips 4

Adventure activities

New Zealand is famous for its adventure activities. If you intend to participate in extreme sports you should check that the company is well established in the industry and your insurance covers you. If you intend visiting remote areas, you should check with local tourist authorities for advice before setting out. You should ensure that you register your details with a Visitor Information Centre or family or friends.

Weather conditions can quickly become treacherous in some areas and you should keep yourself informed of regional weather forecasts.

Top tips 5

Travel insurance

It is essential that you have travel insurance for your Sport Lived programme. We will provide contact details of travel insurance companies in your Confirmation. Please think carefully about the activities you might undertake whilst overseas and ensure your policy offers cover for these.
