Working overseas

Work experience

Many Sport Lived participants wish to gain work whilst overseas. On our coaching programmes, paid work is set up in advance although you might wish to supplement coaching hours with alternative work.

Working overseas NZ

Benefits

Having a job whilst overseas has a number of benefits and we actively encourage participants to find work. Some of the benefits to finding work include:

- You will meet a much wider group of people and develop your social network

- Employment provides a structure to your time away, which in turn, will help you become more organised and keep you busy

- Demonstrating an ability to find and retain employment overseas will look great on your CV

- Earning money gives you more financial independence

Tips and advice

Your mentor can help you job hunt. Get in touch before you leave home to let them know what type of work you would like so that they can keep an eye out and provide useful advice from a local perspective. You might also wish to consider gaining some career focused work experience whilst overseas.  Many Sport Lived participants have spent time doing voluntary work or unpaid work experience such as working in hospitals, engineering companies and law firms. Whilst generally unpaid, this type of work demonstrates commitment and initiative and is likely to be viewed very favourably by employers and universities. Whilst we can help you find work, ultimately it’s your responsibility so you’ll need to be organised and pro-active.

Follow our golden rules to have the best chance of getting work arranged:

- Prepare a CV before you leave home

- Get experience in the field of work you would like to pursue whilst away

- Gain all the relevant qualifications you require before leaving home (e.g. coaching certificates, IT qualifications, etc)

- Ensure you have the names and contact details for two referees

- Utilise the support and advice offerede by the Sport Lived team in the UK and your mentor
