Play Cricket in New Zealand

Sport Lived can organise for you to play cricket in New Zealand.  The nation’s passion for the sport is hard to match and the excellent facilities, coaching and organisation of club cricket provides you with a fantastic opportunity to develop your game in a competitive and sociable environment.

Players on our cricket programme travel to New Zealand in mid September and play for a club for an entire season until March.  We send players to all of New Zealand’s main cities – Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.  In each city we have handpicked the best cricket clubs for people to join who have excellent coaching, facilities and social scenes.  A number of the clubs we organise for people to join have provincial and international players providing you with a wonderful opportunity to play and train with some of the country’s finest cricketers.

Most cricket clubs in New Zealand have between 5 – 7 senior mens’ teams.  As the clubs are large they can accommodate players of all abilities. Clubs also organise regular social events throughout the season which are always well attended and lots of fun.

Whilst in New Zealand you will play a combination of one and two day matches.  Two day matches are played over consecutive Saturdays with 80 overs being bowled on each day.  One day matches are usually 50 overs per team.  Clubs usually train 2-3 times a week and most clubs employ a coach to take training sessions during the week.

Several of the cricket clubs we have affiliations with in New Zealand have strong female sections.  Most clubs have 3-5 women’s teams, with their first teams playing the highest standard of club cricket in New Zealand.  If you’re selected for your club’s first team you will play with and against provincial and international players.  Most women’s teams play a combination of 20/20 matches, one day games and two day games.

Most of the clubs we have affiliations with in New Zealand have large junior sections and we encourage all players to get involved in coaching juniors at their club. Coaching is lots of fun and a great way to develop key skills such as leadership, communication and organisational skills.

Sport Lived employ staff in each city in New Zealand who will be available 24/7 throughout your programme and will help you to get settled in your new home city.  You will also receive a hand book which has lots of useful information e.g. how to open a bank account, get a mobile phone, apply for an IRD number etc.  These are distributed at the pre departure briefing which is held approximately 6 weeks prior to your departure

There is usually a break in the cricket season of approximately 3 weeks over the Christmas and New Year period.  Many players use this break to do some travelling around the country often heading for the South Island and Queenstown in particular to take part in some adventurous activities.   As well as being great for sport New Zealand is incredible beautiful offering some spectacular scenery.  We encourage all Sport Lived participants playing sport in New Zealand to travel either before, during or after their programme and experience all that is great about the country.
