We offer football our coaching placements in two great cities, Melbourne and Brisbane. During the programme you will coach sport to youngsters at local schools and can expect between 5 and 10 hours of paid coaching work a week. You’ll take training sessions during the week and prepare your team for matches at weekends.
You’ll share accommodation in some of Australia’s most vibrant cities. Living with other Sport Lived participants gives you a whole new group of friends whilst overseas.
Australian Working Holiday Visa
In order to undertake a Sport Lived coaching programme in Australia you will need to obtain an Australian Working Holiday Visa. UK citizens aged 18-30 are eligible for an Australian Working Holiday Visa which enables holders to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months. It costs around £150 and can take up to 4 weeks to process so we recommend getting the paperwork sorted well in advance of your departure.
For more information see the Travel & Visa section in the Need to Know area of our site.
No! To guarantee your coaching placement, you should obtain relevant coaching qualifications prior to departure. This will give you the necessary skills to plan and organise coaching sessions.
In addition, gaining practical coaching experience will provide excellent preparation for your programme.
Rates of pay for coaching compare favourably to other forms of casual work in Australia. We can’t guarantee your rates in advance, but you can expect to earn £10-£12 per hour.
Once you have submitted a booking form, we’ll start working behind the scenes to put everything in place for the perfect programme.
Final payment is due 12 weeks prior to departure, and once received we can finalise your programme.
Approximately 4 weeks before the start of your trip we will send details of your new address and flatmates in Oz, and information on the school at which you will be coaching.
Upon arrival in Australia, you’ll meet the Director of Sport at your school. He or she will then assign you to a team and let you know the days and times of your coaching work.
Hopefully, most key pieces of information are available on the website where you can download programme notes, prices and dates. Our Need to Know section also contains lots of useful information. If you have other questions or just want to have a chat, we’re always available either on the phone or via email.
We know that planning a trip overseas can be scary at times and there’s loads to think about. So don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need to discuss anything at all.
You’ll have plenty of time outside your coaching schedule should you wish to find additional work. As well as further boosting your CV and bank balance, finding another job will help you meet more people and provide more structure to your time away.

You will be living close to lots of employment options like offices, shops, bars and restaurants. Your Sport Lived mentor, and contacts made through your coaching placement, will be able to help you find extra work.
So, you’re passionate about football and want to share this with youngsters in an exciting overseas environment? With a Sport Lived coaching placement, you can develop your own coaching skills whilst passing on your knowledge and enthusiasm to the next generation.
During your football coaching experience you’ll be working with a local Aussie school or club football team. On average, coaches can expect around 5-10 hours of paid work a week, and, if desired, it is often possible to supplement this with work as a referee.
Coaches generally work with a junior football team for an entire school term, helping to develop skills and working on match tactics. The structure of our programme allows you to build a bond with your team, and working on their development over a sustained period is highly rewarding.
A Sport Lived coaching placement is also a fantastic addition to any CV; you’ll develop organisational, leadership and communication skills. Having taken responsibility for a team of mini Aussies, you’ll probably feel ready for anything!
In order to guarantee your Sport Lived football coaching programme, you’ll need to obtain coaching qualifications prior to departure. As a minimum, you should pass the FA Level 1 coaching qualification. We also recommend that you get as much practical coaching experience as possible before you departure.
If you’re unable to obtain a football coaching qualification before you leave please let us know. Some schools are happy to employ coaches who just have playing and coaching experience.
Further details of how and where to obtain football coaching qualifications can be found on the FA’s coaching website.

You’ll be living with other Sport Lived participants who are playing and coaching a wide variety of sports. This provides a ready made group of friends with whom you’ll explore life in your chosen Aussie city.

Your programme will begin with introductory drinks during the first week, co-ordinated by your mentor, who will also organise monthly social events. These might include a day out at a seasonal sporting event, a traditional Aussie barbie, pub golf, etc.
There were so many highlights, but I think my biggest was having my first win with my Year 8 team. I was surprised at how much I got into the games, imagining kicking and heading every ball!
I think it has changed me in the sense that I now know I want to work with kids for the rest of my life as I loved the coaching!
Definitely come to Australia with money so you can travel and do lots of activities whilst you’re over here.
They should choose Sport Lived as it gives you a chance to work and live in an amazing city on the other side of the world!
My coaching has improved loads, as has my confidence which will help me so much when I start my PE teacher training in September.
I’m glad I went on a Sport Lived programme because it has made me realise what I want to do for the rest of my life and for that I am so grateful.
Probably winning the team of the year award at my school, but nights out and seeing the Aussie Rules games weren't too shabby either!
I reckon it matures you as a person, living on my own for the first time and being so far from home you need to be far more self sufficient, especially in a country where everything is so expensive. Having to be organised for your team also naturally helps you to mature.
In the school break go to the south island of New Zealand, especially Queenstown. After going to Queenstown I can die a happy man!
I’d say it depends on who you are, if you want to see more of the world and travel, then Sport Lived is for you. if you want to do sport, particularly for the social side of sport then it's a very good idea. Also because they do a lot of leg work with regards to jobs and accommodation and of course because Rod Jones, the Programme Co-Ordinator, is an absolute god!
I had to completely change my style because I was given a girls’ team in a higher age group. It was very different to the past teams I’ve coached so it helped me improve my skills in that way.
I’ve met some good people and had a laugh - I've loved it!
The socials and nights out with the other Sport Lived guys were incredible and definitely provided to be some of the highlights. The quality and location of the accommodation was definitely another huge positive.
I’ve made some great mates who I still keep in touch with and in regards to coaching I have definitely improved. The experience I gained, has helped me in jobs I have had since then. Sport Lived definitely helped me become a bit more independent and get ready for life at uni, as by the time I went I was used to living away from home. Aside from that I’ve just got some great times had with Sport Lived to look back upon.
Just to enjoy it as it didn’t seem to last long enough and to know that the Sport Lived rep is there to solve any problems that come up.
It gives you the opportunity to make some great mates and work in brilliant places. Having a Sport Lived rep out there made a huge difference and the socials organised were quality. The accommodation we were put up in was incredible, the location and the facilities were perfect for what we needed.
I have improved as a coach partly through the experience of coaching for a number of months, but mostly due to the staff at the school, they were always on hand to offer advice if it was needed and were brilliant to work with. Working around the other coaches at the school definitely greatly improved my ability as a coach.
I’ve made some great mates, greatly improved my coaching and had some amazing times with Sport Lived.

...of Richard Khodabakhsh who worked as a football coach in Brisbane from March to August.
Woke up to another sunny day in Brisbane and decided to go for a quick jog in the gym before heading out to catch a few rays. Then it decided to rain for the first time in over a month!! This ended my plan of lying in the sun, so spent the rest of the day watching films with a few of the other Sport Lived lads.
My coaching was cancelled after last night’s rain. Used this day off to visit the bank and book a trip to Fiji. Also did the weekly food/drink shop. In the evening, decided to go to the cinema with Sport Lived mates before giving our room a quick tidy before the cleaners come in the morning.
Coaching session with my junior team today. Worked them hard on fitness, some set-play drills followed by a practice match. The guys do well and are so enthusiastic. Later I head down to the park with the Sport Lived guys to play a bit of football and touch rugby. It was good fun and extremely messy!
Another training session today. Really enjoying coaching my juniors – it’s such a satisfying job and the set up at the school is extremely professional. Very excited about my first pay cheque tomorrow. The Sport Lived gang have been invited to a house party by a local Aussie we met recently – good fun experiencing an Aussie party.
I woke up with a very sore head, so today has mainly consisted of detoxing after last night’s shenanigans. We also popped out for a little while and bought a few poker chips for a chilled night of poker, beer and snacks.
College games today so I’m taking charge of my team in a match against another local school. Never thought I’d get so nervous, but I’m so proud of the guys when they scrape a 3-2 victory.
It’s the monthly Sport Lived social event organised by our mentor Simon. Today it’s an Aussie BBQ. To work up an appetite, a few of us went to the local sports centre for a 5-a-side game.
Sun, sea, sand and SPORT! Australia’s sporting prowess is as legendary as the Great Barrier Reef and a Sport Lived programme is your chance to experience both.
Our programmes run to cities across Australia. Click on each city to learn more but be warned, choosing your destination is NOT an easy decision.

Simon heads up the Sport Lived team in Brisbane and is a thoroughbred Queenslander. He’s travelled the world but made Brissy his home, so hear all about his favourite city.
Beautiful one day, perfect the next is the ideal way to describe sunny Queensland. Brisbane is located right at the heart of Queensland and is renowned for its laid-back lifestyle and welcoming atmosphere. It’s hard to go wrong with the tropical climate which leads to long balmy nights spent either on the beach or enjoying a cold drink with friends.
Situated on the magnificent Brisbane River the city is the place to be. It is well known for its bustling night life. Whether you want a couple of drinks in a traditional Australian pub, a night on the dance floor or anything in between, Brisbane has a night spot to suit. Brisbane is very popular among travellers and backpackers as the city is constantly thriving with life.
Brisbane also boasts two of Australia’s best sporting stadiums. The Gabba and Suncorp Stadium host matches of Rugby League, Cricket, Aussie Rules, A League Football, Rugby Union - basically every sport you could wish for!
The city is also just an hour's drive from the stunning Gold Coast, which is known internationally as a popular tourist destination, thanks to its white sandy beaches and crystal clear ocean. Maybe now is the time to take up the opportunity to learn how to surf; or travel up further north to the beautiful rainforests and spectacular waterfalls.
In summary, Brisbane is a fantastic city offering amazing experiences. Your time spent here will be remembered and treasured for life.

Matt has been part of the Sport Lived team in Melbourne for the last few years. Although he was born in the US, he was raised in Melbourne and considers the city home, making him perfectly placed to tell you all about its attractions.
First things first. Whether it be playing professionally, socially with mates, coaching or simply watching on the telly, Melburnians LOVE sport. It doesn't matter where you are - the heart of the city, a country town, or in the suburbs, you will not only find a pub with a TV screen, but also an enthusiastic Aussie crowd to watch the action. In terms of live sport, we have the famous Boxing Day test match, Aussie Open Tennis, Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup – Australia’s most famous horse race.
But there’s more than sport. Most importantly, the Melbourne people are an incredible bunch. There's a warm, community sense that vibrates through the city. The locals are typically laid back and welcoming. They love to show off their city and will probably insist on taking you out on the town, exchanging slang words and introducing you to their mates.
This city is famous as the home of culture in Australia and has amazing art exhibitions, markets, music and comedy festivals; shopping, nightclubs and trendy bars. Whatever your taste, you'll find places in Melbourne dedicated to people like yourself.
