Play Hockey in New Zealand

Sport Lived can arrange for you to play hockey in New Zealand.  Our hockey programmes run from March to August.  You will play hockey for a club in either Auckland or Christchurch for the duration of a southern hemisphere season.  We also run an 8 week programme to Auckland during July and August.

In each city we have handpicked the best hockey clubs for people to join. Each club has been carefully selected for their top notch coaching, facilities and social scenes.  A number of the clubs have provincial and New Zealand internationals (‘Black Sticks’) providing you with the opportunity to play with and against some of the country’s best players. Most hockey clubs in New Zealand have 5-7 senior men’s and women’s teams who can accommodate players of all abilities.  Whether you’re an elite player or a social player you’re guaranteed an awesome time playing for a great club in a brilliant city.   

Whilst in New Zealand you’ll have access to excellent hockey facilities and coaching.  Most clubs train 2-3 times a week and play matches at the weekends.  The majority of training sessions and matches are played on water based pitches.  Most clubs employ coaches to work with their senior teams. A lot of the coaches are former international players providing you with an opportunity to receive tuition and mentoring from those who have reached the pinnacle of their sport.     

Most hockey clubs have large junior sections and we encourage all Sport Lived participants to get involved in coaching juniors during their time in New Zealand.  Coaching is lots of fun and a great way to develop key skills such as leadership, communication and organisational skills. 

During your time in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch you will stay in 4 star city centre apartments with other Sport Lived participants providing a ready made group of friends as soon as you arrive.  You will live with people playing hockey and other sports including netball, rugby and swimming.  We employ mentors in each city who will be available 24/7 throughout your programme.
