Swim in Australia

Australia is one of the world’s leading nations for swimming.  At the 2004 Olympic Games the Australian swimming team finished second in the medals table behind the USA.

Sport Lived offers you a great opportunity to swim with a club in Australia for a southern hemisphere season.  We organise for people to swim with clubs in all of Australia’s main cities.  Our programmes run for approximately 23 weeks: September – March or March –  August.  We also run a 12 week swimming programme to Brisbane between March and June and we run an 8 week swimming programme to Brisbane during July and August, ideal for university students or those not taking a gap year.  As well as having excellent swimming clubs, Brisbane also has warm weather throughout the year so you’re guaranteed loads of sunshine whenever you choose to visit.

We have affiliations with excellent swimming clubs who have been carefully selected for their top class facilities, coaching and social scenes. You will receive quality coaching at your club often from individuals who have worked with state and national swimming squads.  Most clubs have 8-10 squads.  These squads comprise of International, National, State, Open Ocean, Developmental and Intermediate squads. The squads train six to ten times each week and take part in competitions at the weekends.  As clubs have lots of members and a variety of squads they are able to accommodate swimmers of all abilities from elite to social.

A number of the swimming clubs have both indoor and outdoor pools and on site gyms.  Swimmers going to Melbourne train at the aquatic centre which hosted the majority of swimming events during the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

You will live in 4 star city centre apartments with other Sport Lived participants providing a ready made group of friends as soon as you arrive.  Most people stay in 2 bedroom apartments and everyone lives in the same complex.  Living in the city means you’re near nightlife and numerous places where you can work.  It also means you’re close to public transport making it easy to get to your club for training and competitions.  Most of the swimming clubs are located close to the city centre.

Note: Sport Lived has an excellent relationship with the top swimming schools and aquatic centres in each city and we can help people to get paid work teaching swimming.  If you would like to teach swimming in Australia you will need to obtain your ASA Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification prior to your departure.
